About Us

We named SophiaGrace Foundation for two guiding ideals: wisdom (Sophia) and compassion (Grace).  

We chose to elevate traditionally female names because of the imbalance we often see in the world today… an imbalance caused in part by the dismissal and denigration of the “feminine principle” and its attributes.  

The concept of "feminine" and "masculine" principles is just one way of expressing the duality that pervades creation.  Opposite forces always seem to be at play:  light and darkness, heat and cold, tension and relaxation.  Many spiritual teachings say that when these opposing forces interrelate well, they create balance and harmony.

However our world today is experiencing  profound imbalance, as the active/striving principle dominates to an extreme degree.  We can see this in the behavior of many nations that focus on absolute power, control, and violence; also in the widespread, obsessive striving for extreme wealth; in the subjugation and exploitation of women and children; and in the mindless destruction of Earth’s beauty and resources.

So we chose two names that embody kindness, respect, generosity, and compassion – toward people, societies, and especially toward the Earth itself – to remind us of a path forward, toward healing, balance and beauty.
